Comparing Cloud Service Platforms is very difficult.  Different platforms have different instance sizes, instance performance and an amazing range of options.  We try to keep things as simple as possible.

Unlike most of the other services, we allow you to build any combination of RAM, CPU, Disk, IOPS and Network Options that you want.  And we let you adjust them with a simple reboot.  Need to add an extra CPU or GB of RAM?  With Software Guru you just stop the server, reconfigure and restart.  None of the Public Cloud options below allow this.  If you rent an entire hypervisor with some of the services (Rackspace) you can do this; but that requires a much larger investment.

We have created a baseline/common server at SGC and have located the closest options currently available at each Cloud Platform and compare them below.  All the providers below have an online cost calculator.  All prices are based on 1 month's usage.  SGC and RS are by calendar month, AWS, Google are by time running, Azure by time the VM is provisioned.  Does not included discount for longer terms.   SGC offers significant discounts for customers who pay by Quarter, Semi-Annual or Annually.

A few notes about the above tables:

  1. Note that in many cases the template is for 15 GB of RAM; to compare directly with SGC, simply subtract $10 from the monthly cost for Software Guru.
  2. All the other services except for Rackspace have firewall equivalents with blocking policies and NAT.  Rackspace relies on Windows Firewall by default unless you specifically add a firewall at an additional cost.
  3. For AWS, Azure, Google there are additional monthly charges for each tunnel that is up.  We do not include those costs in this comparison.
  4. For Rackspace, if you add a firewall to your configuration, VPN Tunnels have a one time setup fee, but no monthly charge beyond that of the firewall.
  5. SGC provides you with a firewall, unlimited VPN Tunnels, unlimited VPN Clients at no additional charge.
  6. For all other providers, for their public cloud offering (the most cost comparable) changing the size of the VM means migrating/converting to a new predefined template and thus higher level charge.
  7. At SGC, if you have the resources available, you can resize your VM by simply rebooting.  If you need more resources, simply request they be added to your account.

Webuzo VPS

Webuzo, the Simplest Linux VPS to Manage 
Webuzo is an incredibly simple to use Linux VM Appliance with a single user Web Control Panel to let you automatically install and update an incredible array of VPS applications:  WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and many more CMS and Blogging platforms.  It also supports all the major development stacks, tools and databases with simple web based installation.

Your built-in Webuzo license allows either one click updates to your applications or automatic updates as soon as they are tested and rolled out by the Webuzo team.

Our Webuzo VPS' come pre-licensed with Webuzo and are packaged with on a 20 GB image.  Purchasing 1x 100 GB of storage allows you to configure either 80 GB of snapshot storage or you (or we) can mount the remaining 80 GB to the VM's home drive, giving you a full 100 GB (or more) of storage.
Your Webuzo is a standard CentOS VM and can host any standard CentOS application or service.  Experienced users can fully customize it.

If you choose to allocate snapshot space for your Webuzo, you can scheduled automated point in time snapshots to automatically back up the entire server, or you can do it on demand before a major upgrade. 		Webuzo appliance are ideal for hosting multiple domains, each performing different functions, a merchant site, a blog site, an ownCloud site; all from a single IP, automatically.

Of course, since it's hosted at Software Guru, where you have your own vCloud, if you want, you can add a second Webuzo attached to a different Public IP, run as many as you want.

Linux Development Environment

  For this scenario was are considering a completely self contained Linux Team Development Center.  We assume the following:
  • It's a "closed system" in that that there is a central LAMP (or similar) server
    • Database Server(s)
    • Web Server/Sites
    • Bug Tracking
    • Code Management
    • File Server
  • All development tools are centralized on an Ubuntu Desktop Server or similar
    • Users VPN in to the vCloud vLAN from wherever they live.  OpenVPN or IPSec Tunnel
    • They connect to the Ubuntu Developer box via ssh and X-11 and do their development work on the server, with code management on the LAMP server
  • In this scenario we assume this is development only and that code will be pushed to a different production site.
    • However, there is no reason that a second production LAMP server could not be added and opened to the Internet
    • Similar, some of the sites (identified as production) on the LAMP server could be exposed through the firewall for production

Cloud Office: Work From Anywhere

  In this scenario we present a full Cloud Office suitable to run a small company completely from the Cloud   We include the following features and assumptions.
  • Much of the pricing is based on a per user model.  For example the amount of storage space, RAM and CPU is all based on how many users you have.
  • For this scenario, we assume 10 Users
  • This is setup for typical Office/Business use.  
    • Resource requirements are somewhat greater for developers.  For example they typically need more CPU and RAM.
    • The same is true for very heavy Excel and Access users.  Those users, if there are many of them working at the same time, may require more RAM and more CPU on the Desktop Server.
  • In this scenario we use Office 365 Business Premium at $12.50/user/month.  
    • This package has some limitations, Mailbox size is limited to 50 GB, and you cannot have more than 25 users.
    • If these limits seem tight, consider Office 365 Enterprise E3 at $20.00/user/month.  It is a great value along with unlimited mailbox storage, unlimited users and much more.
    • Office 365 payments are made at Office 365 via credit card in the owners account.
  • In this scenario we offered full server and Office 365 Administration
    • Office 365 only administration is $5.00/user/month with a 10 user minimum.
    • Full Cloud Office administration (excluding Office 365) is $15/user/month and includes full windows server administration, firewall administration, user administration..
